Pitter Patter

21 May

I read yet another baby shower card about the pitter patter of little feet and wipe a tear away. And it isn’t just because my hormones are nuts. That “pitter patter” is something I’ve really been looking forward to hearing.

Fast forward 18 months. Mister tears through the living room and dives onto his “snuggly dog,” an oversized stuffed-animal. It sounds more like “thump, thwack, boom” than “pitter patter.” Try socks you say? It just makes the boom bigger as he slides and falls on the hardwood floors.

Maybe the “pitter patter” of little feet is unrealistic, especially if you have a giant and energetic boy like me. But, that’s ok. “Thump thwack” is special too.

What is your favorite onomatopoeia or sound description?

Schoomp. The sound of Jared Rizzi taking a hemet off his head.

Let me elaborate a little. Jared was the third of three friends to go into the batting cages. After the other two struck out, we weren’t expecting much. Surprisingly, he hit the ball really well. Really, really well. He came out with a new swagger, put his bat back on the rack, and pulled at his helmet. Maybe hitting well inflated his head. Maybe the helmet was snug when he went in. Whatever the reason, it suctioned to his head as he was hitting. Schoomp. Off came the helmet. And down went his pride.

We went to college with a kid whose last name was Schimpf. That’s pretty onomotapoetic, though I’m not really sure what for. I think I like all water-related words like plop, ploop, schloop. Plunk is good. A dink is a good baseball one. Maybe the word “tinker” also? Could be onomotapoetic. Thpbhthbthpt…. the spitting sound is a fun one. There are a lot of good ones.
